Travel Fishing Kit
Where are some good fishing piers in the southern part of Florida on the gulf?
I usually fish off the pier on Sanibel Island but I won't probably be going there this time. I plan on going to Naples, Ft.Myers, Clearwater, Tampa, and just around that general area. I'm not a big fisher so just fishing of the pier provides plenty of excitement for me. I'm traveling there next week. What is in season right now and what kind of bait would be best? And finally, how much should I pay for a decent but cheap pole and fishing kit and how much is a license for more than one day for out-of-state visitors? Thanks.
I live closer to Sanibel but know the pier by the sky bridge to St. Pete/Clearwater can be productive, I really haven't heard too much about the pier in Naples, but it's worth a try. For bait, I swear by live shrimp. You can't go wrong with shrimp, they'll catch everything. Right now, sheepshead and trout are the best bets from a pier, maybe the occasional pompano too. Wherever you fish there will be a bait shop close by, so just ask about the bait and you'll get a straight answer. The rod and reel thing is up to you. Since you've fished before, you know what you need. Some piers and bait shops will even rent you a set-up. License for out of state, 3 day $6.50 and 7 day $16.50. That info was as of Dec. 2007.
