Can I pack a laptop bag with clothes as a carry on?

I'm traveling next weekend with AA and US Airways. They both allow 1 carry-on and 1 personal item (such as a purse or laptop) to be brought on board. I want to avoid checking any luggage. So, I'll definitely bring a carry-on with clothes, etc. But, if I run out of room, I'm looking for additional options. So, are these things allowed?

1. Wear a coat and put small clothes/necessities in the pockets. (And if this is allowed, do you have to empty your jacket pockets at security before you put it through the scanner?)
2. Bring a laptop bag WITHOUT a laptop, and instead filled with clothes/necessities.
3. Bring a laptop bag empty to use on the return trip for souvenirs.
4. Bring a laptop bag WITH a laptop, but also stuff the pockets with small clothes/necessities.

Any other "hidden" storage options? (I know you can wear clothes in layers, which I think it a great idea for bringing a jacket and button-down shirt, for example.)

All or any of those options are OK.

They will want you to take your coat off at the x-ray machine and put it into a bin. They do not ask you to empty the coat pockets. They can see everything that is in the pockets, though.

Don't load your pants pockets with anything metallic - then you will have a problem going through the metal detector.

Really - no one cares whether or not you actually have a laptop in that rectangular bag. A bag is a bag is a bag. It's all the same to them. Personally, I take my laptop in a medium size backpack, since there is more room in that than in the actual laptop bag that I have.

If you do take the laptop, just be sure that you take it out of the bag and put it into a plastic bin, by itself, before pushing everything through the x-ray machine.

Don't put liquid items into your coat pockets.
All liquid, pastes, gels, lotions, creams, and aerosols need to be:
- in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less
- all in a single, 1 quart size zip lock bag
- each ticketed passenger (you) get to take only 1 such bag
- the zip lock bag must be able to close
- take that zip lock bag out of your luggage and put it into a bin so they can see it before going through the x-ray machine

If you want, you could take 3 small bottles of the same shampoo - as long as each one is 3.4 ounces or less.

Medications - prescription and over the counter - are all permitted. Liquid medication more than 3.4 ounces is also permitted, just tell the TSA people that you have a larger quantity.
