Answers below:
court reporters??
first of all...what do they do?
<< they "write" or take down everything someone says. There are court, court reporters that work in a courthouse, but most reporters work privatey for attorneys taking down depositions. Some court reporters also do things like closed-captioning (it's the same sort of technology).>>
how do they type everything?? is it in codes or how does that work?
Yes, it's a form of shorthand where you basically type a whole word by pressing MULTIPLE keys at the same time. So rather than typing letters, you type words. Court reporters then use computer software to "transcribe" the shorthand into something (other) humans can read. They may also be "real time" reporters, taking things down to show on a screen for an attorney or judge as it happens.
do court reporters get to travel to different countries??
Generally no. Most of the time witnesses have to be sworn in by court reporters, and only a notary/citizen/officer of the court in the country in which depositions are being taken would be there.
about how much do court reporters get paid?
Lots, really. I know a reporter who did a lot of outside work and owned a mercedes SUV. Pretty good for someone that doesn't have to have a college education.
When you're in the private sector, it just depends upon how many appointments you want to do in a week and how late you want to stay up at night transcribing "urgent" depositions (at something like $4.00 per page).
is that an honorable job??
Yes. I really respect the reporters I work with
.
is being a court reporter boring?? it seems like it would be
I think so, just as most court proceedings are very boring for everyone except the attorneys, the witness, and sometimes the parties. Some reporters like it though because you get to meet lots of different people and hear about lots of different things (like moisture instrusion in houses, medical testimony in car accident cases, business valuation in corporate cases, how things work in patent cases... you get the picture.)
what training do you need to become a court reporter and how long is it and is it difficult?
(a) Look up the Court Reporter's Association. Usually you have to be certified. I think it's only a few months' training. But an associates' degree is a good thing to have too. It all depends upon how quickly you can get your hands to do the right thing. Some people take to it and can go very fast. Some people could probably never do it. Listening, thinking, and typing at the same time is a tough skill... that's why reporters get paid as well as they do.
