How do I refinish an old travel trunk?
I was given a trunk its old and lined with some kind of paper. It has two leather straps on the front and the latch it broken. The finish on it looks bad so I want to strip it and refinish it. What would be the best way?
Is it wood or steel.
If it is steel sand ot lightly and paint it.
Of course if it is wood you could give it a light sanding and a new coat of paint or varnish.
You could pull any lose paper out and glue new paper (wallpaper?) or cloth into it.
The wood on the inside under the paper is usually pretty rough looking so it is best to just replace the liner inside if it is ugly inside.
You can buy new locks for them from specialty hardware stores. In Canada Lee Valley carries them. But I likely would not bother though I might remove it.
