transporting dog by air?

I am taking our 4 year old, 25lb Jack Russell mix from La Paz, Mexico to California but have never transported a dog via airlines, only by car. He was born here. He is current on his rabies vaccine and has his certificate of health. We have our reservation for the flight. I am looking for general information. Things to do/not to do. What to expect? Should I give him a mild sedative since traveling by car makes him nervous? It is a 2 hour drive to the airport and the flight is a about 2:45 straight thru to San Francisco.
Should I have copies of his paper work attached to the crate?

ALL the airlines have FREE 800 numbers-answered by PROS!!!! CALL & ask.
ALL airlines must follow FEDERAL REGS-including TEMPERATURE LIMITS!!!!!!!! They will NOT accept animals above certain temps!

No airline will accept *DRUGGED* animals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's dangerous!
You need to check-in 2 hrs BEFORE the flight.....walk dog through the parking lot for elimination. .
